WINTER BARLEY VARIETY FEILD DAYS

Event features a winter barley collaborative project in Southeast Michigan, featuring farmer Ryan Luckhardt, a junior at Saline High School and active FFA member. Other partners include local food system consultant, New Growth Associates; Fermenta, a women’s craft beverage trade organization; and Michigan State University. The showcased research trial is examining the performance of various winter malting barley varieties and their suitability for the local craft malt and craft beer market. Event features winter and spring performance and management trials and will include speakers from the seed industry and MSU researcher, Dr. Brook Wilke, who will present on research ventures underway to explore double-cropping options within malting barley production. HERITAGE RYE Crop Walk

April 25, 2018 |   6pm – 8pm

at Plymouth Organic Orchards and Cider Mill, Plymouth Michigan

We gathered at Plymouth Orchards and Cider Mill in Plymouth to explore the budding prospects for local grain production for local markets. This Heritage Rye Crop Walk highlighted a field of rye destined for Macon Creek Malt House and craft brewers and distillers. We discussed varieties of rye, why small grains are important for good soil health, and how Michigan's craft food and beverage industries can support Michigan agriculture and vice versa. Light snacks were provided by Plymouth Orchards and Cider Mill & Zingerman's Bakehouse.

MALTING BARLEY INFORMATION AND DEMONSTRATION FIELD DAY

As the craft brewing industry is expanding in Michigan, so is the desire to source locally grown barley for malting. Join barley experts from Michigan State University and the malting and brewing industry for a barley discussion about what’s needed, what to grow, what it takes to grow it, and other considerations. Participants will be able to see over 60 winter and spring barley varieties, and learn about specific management strategies to optimize crop production and quality for sale to local malt houses. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.

Localizing the Grainshed- Oat Twilight Crop Walk

We gathered at the Zilke Vegetable Farm stand in Milan to explore the budding prospects for local grain production for local markets. The Oat Twilight Crop Walk highlighted a field of oats destined for the local supply chain, featured discussions on production practices and market opportunities, and we shared resources on how to engage in the local grain community.
Craft beer from Original Gravity and light fare were served. This event was free, but registration was strongly encouraged.

These workshops are intended for PRODUCERS AND BUYERS of niche grains that participate in Washtenaw County's food and farm economy - either located in Washtenaw County, buying from or selling to a Washtenaw businesses. If you do not meet this criteria, please donate $15 to cover your expenses and allow yourself to be bumped from the workshop in case capacity is reached.
